in Online Training with Lorenzo Gaspar By Jenna Sampson This article is featured in the Ms. Fitness' summer issue above. Article featured Are you tired of second place? Always feel like something’s missing in your pre-competition training? Not sure what that missing link is? Whether you’re an elite competitor or have just caught the fitness bug, if you’re serious about achieving a perfect physique, it’s just a fingertip away. Lorenzo Gaspar’s online fitness consulting
program produces winners across the globe, and many will be on stage in
Las Vegas for the Flex Appeal All-Women International Championships on
September 1, 2007. This contest is a prelude to the Ms. Fitness USA Finals
and Ms. Fitness World on September 6-7, 2007, which is televised on Fox
Sports Network (FSN) and is sponsored by “Supplements To Go.” He has been chosen as Natural Team USA’s Advisory Coach by the ABA (Amateur Bodybuilding Association) since 1989. He accompanies the team to competitions abroad, and this year they travel to Greece. “Because I travel all over the world to judge competitions, I have a lot of people approach me with various questions about training and nutrition,” he says. “The only viable way to help people out is by communicating online.” Lorenzo works with an average of 15 people at a time on-line, but closer to big competitions, the number can almost double. “I have some competitors email me just one time for advice on a particular subject,” he says. “But I also have clients that I communicate with every week on an ongoing basis. Basically, I try to help out athletes as much as I can, according to their needs.” Competitors email Lorenzo photos from the front, side and back, and provide information on their current training and nutrition program. In turn, he reviews the entire program, pinpoints problem areas, and makes adjustments to get competitors back on track. “I also have clients submit body fat test results once a month, and closer to competition every other week, so I can see how their body is responding to training,” he adds. “I work with a lot of clients who already have a one-on-one trainer in their respective locations, but just aren’t getting the results they want,” states Lorenzo. “A lot of trainers continue to train women like bodybuilders, and the result is a bulky muscle lacking in proper symmetry. I really enjoy helping competitors achieve that winning symmetry.” Lorenzo’s training program is also ideal for new competitors who are still learning about symmetry and truly want to train with the best. Just don’t ask him for help with the fitness routine or how to walk during the evening gown portion of the competition! “It probably wouldn’t be a good idea to ask me how to walk in an evening gown, and I don’t have a background in gymnastics,” he laughs. Lorenzo is President of the ABA, which hosts 75 percent of the Ms. Fitness USA qualifiers, and is the North American President of the INBA (International Natural Bodybuilding Association). He was named “Coach of the Decade” by the INBA, and has been voted “Coach of the Year” by the ABA since 2000. Various San Diego publications have also chosen him “Trainer of the Year” several times. Launching the Flex Appeal All-Women International Championships was a momentous occasion for Lorenzo. It is the first-ever event featuring every female competition category including: Bodybuilding, Ms. Physique, Ms. Figure, Ms. Fitness, Sports Model, and Bikini Divas. “It was time for an event like this to be developed,” he says. “No one has ever offered this many age divisions and categories at a female-only event.” This prestigious contest features Ms. Fitness divisions in Kids (age 6-13 years), Teenage (age 14-19 years), Novice (haven’t competed at the Ms Fitness USA Finals), Open, Junior Masters (35-39 years old), and Masters (40-plus years old). The field of entrants included the best-of-the-best, as well as competitors new to the stage. “For me, the easiest categories to judge are the evening gown and routines, but my favorite is the physique round,” explains Lorenzo. “It’s the most challenging round because you have athletes with different body types trying to demonstrate the same elements of judging criteria. After giving the athletes their scores, I assess the type of training they’ve been doing to get the physiques they are displaying on stage.” Along with his vision for creating an all-female event of this magnitude, Lorenzo also has a vision for supporting non-profit organizations that aid female causes. For more information, visit his Web site (www.lorenzogaspar.com). As Head Judge of the IFSB (International Fitness Sanctioning Body), he travels extensively around the globe. The international stage has increased its level of competition considerably over the last several years, and the World Championships continue to produce an impressive lineup each year in Las Vegas, NV. “I definitely do a lot of traveling for the international competitions,” he adds. “I’ve been to Europe, New Zealand and Japan, I was in Australia last year, and I’m going to Greece this year.” Many competitors are willing to travel as well, especially for an in-person assessment with Lorenzo prior to starting his online consulting program. “I have competitors fly in to San Diego to meet with me and have a complete assessment before we begin communicating online, especially if they’re new to the sport and really want good direction from the beginning,” he says. Online training with Lorenzo can be a great way to get that extra edge on the competition. He designs a complete nutrition (he’s also a licensed sports nutritionist) and training program tailored specifically for each client at a reasonable price. “The nutrition program includes everything clients drink or eat on a daily basis, and is customized according to pre-competition specifications as the event approaches.” If winning your next competition and pursuing excellence is high on your “to-do list,” Lorenzo may be just the ticket. His complete program, combined with unparalleled experience in the fitness industry, is a truly winning combination.
